Recording Masterclass - Crooked Rain Recording Studio, Leeds - 24/06/18

£150.00

Hey! My name is Bob Cooper, i'm a record producer based at Crooked Rain Recording Studio in Leeds, and I make records with punk, indie and emo bands.

When I started my path in the recording industry, I was never really happy with the education I was receiving from University and online classes. "Is that it?" I'd think during another lecture about the frequency response of an SM57, or a half baked article on miking a guitar amp. I never found that there was enough detail or guidance, so I took it on myself to spend every day learning new techniques and testing them in sessions, talking to other producers and engineers about the work they do and striving to make truly great sounding records.

Over the past few years, i've been writing in depth about the work I do, passing on as much as I can, but i've decided the best way to teach would be a one day, information and experience packed day - a shortcut to making great sounding recordings.

The class will be on Sunday 24th June, limited to 10 people and we'll record a song from start to finish, deconstructing and evaluating the most effective techniques - and at the end of the day, you can take the files home to mix yourself.

If you want to learn:
- How to perfectly tune the whole drum kit to be record ready so you don't need to rely on drum samples.

- The simple trick to avoid hi hat bleed.

- Using room mics effectively to get a huge, natural live drum sound.

-How to get a bass guitar with the sort of attack and tone hat cuts through a wall of distorted guitars without any midrange honk.

- How to get perfectly articulate distorted guitars every time.

- How to treat a vocalist to get a performance that pops and retains all the subtle nuances of their personality.

Then this class will be for you.

The nine hour session will also cover :

Drums -
-Finding the best spot in the room for the drum kit using the floor tom technique and setting it up to get the most power from the instrument while being sympathetic to the player's technique.
- Replacing heads and discussing the most effective drum heads for recording purposes.
- Drum tuning (in a ton of detail - we go DEEP on this).
- My favourite drum dampening gear.
- Coaching techniques to get the best performance out of the drummer.
- Microphone shootouts (is an SM57 the best choice for a snare top?).
- Microphone positioning to capture the most honest and powerful drum performances.
- The many approaches to room miking.
- Comping and editing so the drums are in time but still feel completely natural.
- Drum processing ITB, using EQ, Parallel and serial compression, harmonic excitement. and saturation, reverb and of course, panning and level.

Bass -
- Restringing and intonation - including which strings are best for which genres.
- Creating an insane bass tone with no amplifier.
- Using bass fuzz and distortion.
- Techniques to get the best performance from your player.

Guitar -
- Taking a scientific approach to microphone placement to ensure the amp sounds exactly the same from the monitors as it does in the live room.
- Guitar, pedal, amplifier and cab shootouts - what to look out for when considering the most effective tone for the song.
- A deep deep discussion on guitar pedals, how to decide which pedal will have the emotional and tonal impact you'll need from a song.
- Creating a clear fuzz guitar tone.
- Approaches to double tracking.

Vocals -
- Getting the best possible performance.
- Microphone & preamp choices.
- Creating a relaxed environment for your vocalist.
- Double tracking, vocal stacking and harmonies.

Session starts at 10am, see you there!
